Still a bit shocked

…by the very first page of The Sign of the Four. Drug abuse! Waston freaking out and Holmes admitting that it’s bad but he doesn’t care! It was kind of upsetting. I have deeper, more eloquent thoughts about it too, but I had to say this right off. Makes me really worry about Holmes.

I completely agree with you. And I really, really like that quote in relation to Holmes and Watson.

  1. Name, general area of origin, and length of time you have considered yourself a Sherlockian/Holmesian/whatever the kids are calling themselves these days? My name is Solange, I’m from Córdoba, Argentina, and I guess I should say I only vaguely consider myself a Sherlockian (I think I have to work a bit more before calling myself that - personal preference, I like to be very meticulous upon entering a fandom) since I was pretty much forced (and how thankful I am for that) to watch the BBC series. While I saw the first movie with RDJ first, I think, I wasn’t as involved in the fandom… like, at all.
  2. Have you read the canon stories before? Let’s just say no. I’ve read several things when I was younger that I later discovered were awfully mistranslated.
  3. If you have: favourite story? -
  4. Favourite adaptation/continuation/other use of the characters? Oh, I love both the BBC series and the most recent movies. I think they both have very good things about them.
  5. Holmes or Watson? (Yes, you actually have to choose. Come on, I know everybody has a preference, out with it. Yes, I really am this cruel. If you say “I can’t choose!” you better have a darn good reason why… No, I’m kidding. Sort of.) Jawn Watson! Not that I do not love Sherlock, of course, but Watson intrigues me so, particularly the BBC version.
  6. Reason why you want to read all the stories in 84 days? What could possibly be more fun than reading these books in such good company? Besides, it’s always been something I told myself I should do. Adding a challenge just made it even more tempting!
  7. Stories about murder, or stories about thefts? As long as they’re well-written, it doesn’t really matter to me. Ok, I might be a bit biased towards murder.
  8. What is Watson’s bullpup? (tee hee. Sorry. Don’t worry about it.)
I’m sorely tempted to ignore any other possibly correct answer and just start to squee about Gladstone because sdhjdgagf dogs (yes, I have clear and logical priorities… yes <_<).
  9. Anything else you want to share with the group? Not really, only that I hope we have a good time and tons of fun :)

Name, general area of origin, and length of time you have considered yourself a Sherlockian/Holmesian/whatever the kids are calling themselves these days?

Elizabeth, from Chicago but attending college in Kentucky, and only for a few months now, after discovering BBC’s Sherlock

Have you read the canon stories before?

I have not, but I can’t wait to get started on them!

If you have: favourite story?

Haven’t read the canon before.

Favourite adaptation/continuation/other use of the characters?

The only one I’ve seen so far is BBC Sherlock, and I absolutely adore it, but I’d like to see others before picking a favorite.

Holmes or Watson? (Yes, you actually have to choose. Come on, I know everybody has a preference, out with it. Yes, I really am this cruel. If you say “I can’t choose!” you better have a darn good reason why… No, I’m kidding. Sort of.)

Hmm…I think I have to go with Holmes.

Reason why you want to read all the stories in 84 days?

I’ve wanted to read the canon after seeing Sherlock and thought that reading the stories with others would be a lot of fun.

Stories about murder, or stories about thefts?

Murder

What is Watson’s bullpup? (tee hee. Sorry. Don’t worry about it.)

My best guess is that it’s a dog.

Anything else you want to share with the group?

Not really, just hello to everyone and I look forward to getting to know you all!

Name, general area of origin, and length of time you have considered yourself a Sherlockian/Holmesian/whatever the kids are calling themselves these days? Katie, currently residing in a cow-town in Washington, and only since I watched BBC Sherlock, so for around a year now.

2.

3.    Have you read the canon stories before? I read several as a kid and have been working through the complete collection recently.

4.    If you have: favourite story? From the few that I’ve read I’m torn between The Sign of Four and the Redheaded League.

5.    Favourite adaptation/continuation/other use of the characters? BBC, though I have a feeling I’ll really like Grandada Holmes once I get around to it.

6.    Holmes or Watson? (Yes, you actually have to choose. Come on, I know everybody has a preference, out with it. Yes, I really am this cruel. If you say “I can’t choose!” you better have a darn good reason why… No, I’m kidding. Sort of.) Watson. Because he seems so perfectly normal at first, but he’s really not. He’s kind of extraordinary, with his devotion to Holmes and how perceptive he becomes towards the Detective. That said I do still adore Sherlock to bits, but there’s just something about Watson that’s captured me from the few incarnations of him I’ve encountered.

7.    Reason why you want to read all the stories in 84 days? Having a schedule like this will actually make me finish for once. I’m a horrific procrastinator, even with things I love, so this will be a great help!

8.    Stories about murder, or stories about thefts? Murders. Muaha.

9.    What is Watson’s bullpup? (tee hee. Sorry. Don’t worry about it.) Really don’t know, but a lick of research has me leaning towards a gun of some sort (though I’d like to imagine it’s Gladstone :p )

10.  Anything else you want to share with the group? Not much other than that I’m excited to start this!

  1. Name, general area of origin, and length of time you have considered yourself a Sherlockian/Holmesian/whatever the kids are calling themselves these days? Jenna, hailing from the great state of Kentucky, and about 2 months, although I remember the Great Mouse Detective and Wishbone as Sherlock Holmes from when I was a kid.
  2. Have you read the canon stories before? I’m about halfway through Volume One of the complete novels and stories. :)
  3. If you have: favourite story? I’m holding out on a decision until I finish them.
  4. Favourite adaptation/continuation/other use of the characters? House or BBC Sherlock (unless the rest of you don’t count House as a version of Sherlock Holmes)
  5. Holmes or Watson? (Yes, you actually have to choose. Come on, I know everybody has a preference, out with it. Yes, I really am this cruel. If you say “I can’t choose!” you better have a darn good reason why… No, I’m kidding. Sort of.) I love Watson. His humanity and his wonder…..he’s just a lovely character.
That being said, I would probably say that Sherlock is my favorite character. He is an asshole and needs to learn better manners (well, the BBC one does at least. ACD’s seems like a gentleman for the most part), but his intellect and deductive reasoning and his ability to spot the little things are incredible and I am quite a bit like John in the fact that I am continually impressed by him. I have a friend who is a bit like Sherlock and even though he drives me insane, he’s immensely interesting to talk to and I like to make him tell me how he deduces his conclusions about people. So Sherlock is definitely my favorite.
  6. Reason why you want to read all the stories in 84 days? I want to have people to talk to about them, and it will prevent me from giving up on the books. :)
  7. Stories about murder, or stories about thefts? Murder. They just seem more interesting for some reason.
  8. What is Watson’s bullpup? (tee hee. Sorry. Don’t worry about it.) Hahahaha, I’m going to go with an actual dog, although some of the speculations in the introduction of my Sherlock Holmes book were entertaining.
  9. Anything else you want to share with the group? I love new friends so send me an ask on my blog and say hi!

  1. Name, general area of origin, and length of time you have considered yourself a Sherlockian/Holmesian/whatever the kids are calling themselves these days?
-Shanzay, US-EST, and I’ve essentially been a Sherlockian/Holmesian since I was about 11, though I must admit there was about a 3-4 year gap in-between the rekindling of my initial obsession after the BBC series came out.
  2. Have you read the canon stories before?
    -Why, yes! I have.
  3. If you have: favourite story?
-Umm, either The Final Problem, The Speckled Band, or The Bruce-Partington Plans. I can never seem to decide.
  4. Favourite adaptation/continuation/other use of the characters?
Besides BBC’s Sherlock? I’d say the Granada series.
  5. Holmes or Watson? (Yes, you actually have to choose. Come on, I know everybody has a preference, out with it. Yes, I really am this cruel. If you say “I can’t choose!” you better have a darn good reason why… No, I’m kidding. Sort of.)
-Most likely Holmes. Not gonna lie, his perspicacious nature is essentially what intrigued me about the stories and have been the main reason for my  love of the dynamics of his character.
  6. Reason why you want to read all the stories in 84 days?
-It seems really fun. Also, I’ve wanted to discuss the stories with someone forever, and this is an awesome way to do so.
  7. Stories about murder, or stories about thefts?
    -Murders.
  8. What is Watson’s bullpup? (tee hee. Sorry. Don’t worry about it.)
-Trololol I lean towards it being a revolver.
  9. Anything else you want to share with the group?
    -Uhh, just hello, I suppose!

I’m Ashley (Okoyn on tumblr) and I live in WA state in the US and I guess I have been a Sherlockian since last summer after my friend had me watch Sherlock.

2.    Have you read the canon stories before?

Just started a few weeks ago. I just started reading The Yellow Face in Memoirs today.

3.    If you have: favourite story?

The Sign of the Four so far but they are all amazing.

4.    Favourite adaptation/continuation/other use of the characters?

BBC Sherlock but I still enjoy the RDJ movies.

5.    Holmes or Watson? (Yes, you actually have to choose. Come on, I know everybody has a preference, out with it. Yes, I really am this cruel. If you say “I can’t choose!” you better have a darn good reason why… No, I’m kidding. Sort of.)

Holmes, he’s just so interesting. Even more so in the Canon.

6.    Reason why you want to read all the stories in 84 days?

It’d be fun talking about the stories with other people.

7.    Stories about murder, or stories about thefts?

Umm… I don’t understand the question. I’ve always loved mystery and in the past few years I’ve really gotten into crime shows.

8.    What is Watson’s bullpup? (tee hee. Sorry. Don’t worry about it.)

Gladstone… wait… is this an innuendo? ;A;

9.    Anything else you want to share with the group?

Not really, only because I can’t think of anything else to say :P

ladyprincessgeek-nerd.tumblr.com introduction

  1. Name, general area of origin, and length of time you have considered yourself a Sherlockian/Holmesian/whatever the kids are calling themselves these days? Hi everyone! My name is Bridget and I’m from Omaha, NE, USA. I’ve always liked Sherlock Holmes, but I became a hardcore Sherlockian when I joined tumblr last May and officially joined the BBC Sherlock fandom. Before that I had been relatively tame for about seven months so I’d say almost a year I’ve been a Sherlockian.
  2. Have you read the canon stories before?
Some of them. I’ve read three of the novels and two of the short stories. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed what I’ve read so far and am looking forward to re-reading and reading the stories with a group of like minded people.
  3. If you have: favourite story?
Of the stories I’ve read, I loved The Adventure of the Red-Headed League. It was such an insane premise, but I loved how Sherlock was able to see through what anyone else would have seen as nonsense to find the truth.
  4. Favourite adaptation/continuation/other use of the characters?
BBC Sherlock followed by Guy Ritchie Sherlock and finally The Great Mouse Detective.
  5. Holmes or Watson? (Yes, you actually have to choose. Come on, I know everybody has a preference, out with it. Yes, I really am this cruel. If you say “I can’t choose!” you better have a darn good reason why… No, I’m kidding. Sort of.)
Holmes. I’d love to be that brilliant quite honestly and not caring about what other people think except for that one special friend would be perfect.
  6. Reason why you want to read all the stories in 84 days?
I love reading, I love a challenge, I love being part of a group doing the same thing, and I want to get through all the stories to work on my other Sherlock tumblr which reviews the stories both canon and non-canon.
  7. Stories about murder, or stories about thefts?
Murder. Much more intense and invested. Things can be replaced, people can’t.
  8. What is Watson’s bullpup? (tee hee. Sorry. Don’t worry about it.) Gladstone! Puppy!!!! I hope he shows up in season  of BBC Sherlock. That would be adorable.
  9. Anything else you want to share with the group? I’m really looking forward to this. If anyone is interested in my Sherlock Holmes review site it is sherlockholmesreviews.tumblr.com. There’s not much there yet, but I promise that I will change that soon. <3 you all!

  1. Name, general area of origin, and length of time you have considered yourself a Sherlockian/Holmesian/whatever the kids are calling themselves these days? Hi, I’m Christina, and I’m from Scotland. I’ve been a Sherlockian for just over a year. I’d read one or two of the stories before that, but hadn’t got that into them.
  2. Have you read the canon stories before? Yes - I actually just finished the final one (my final one - I didn’t read them in order) a couple of weeks ago
  3. If you have: favourite story? Most of them I’ve only read once, so I don’t really know them well enough to pick a favourite. I liked The Speckled Band, because it’s quite scary, and The Red-Headed League because the criminal’s plan is so silly - though of course it still very nearly works :P
  4. Favourite adaptation/continuation/other use of the characters? BBC’s Sherlock. As anyone who looks at my blog will immediately notice… :P
  5. Holmes or Watson? (Yes, you actually have to choose. Come on, I know everybody has a preference, out with it. Yes, I really am this cruel. If you say “I can’t choose!” you better have a darn good reason why… No, I’m kidding. Sort of.) You are cruel. I’m gonna say…Holmes? But I’d probably have a different answer if you ask me at a different time..
  6. Reason why you want to read all the stories in 84 days? I’d like to read the stories again, and I think it’ll be fun to read them with other people :)
  7. Stories about murder, or stories about thefts? Murrrrrder. More exciting ;)
  8. What is Watson’s bullpup? (tee hee. Sorry. Don’t worry about it.) Um, I don’t know. A google search suggested that it was only mentioned once, in A Study in Scarlet, and was in fact quite possibly a gun and not a dog at all (I would be lost without my Boswell google)
  9. Anything else you want to share with the group? Er, I tend to ramble. A lot. Often making very little sense as I do it. So sorry in advance for that :P Oh, and I overuse the “:P” smiley, as you can possibly see from this post - though I’ve actually used it quite sparingly here, for me.

Hey! cosmostrekker here.

I just wanted to say that all the classic books are available here online:
